Schwann Cell Ca2+
Signaling
We're interested in the mechanisms and functional role of neural activity-induced Ca2+ signaling in Schwann cells along the axon (ASCs) as well as those at the NMJ (terminal/perisynaptic Schwann cells or TPSCs), both in development and in the context of injury or disease.
Schwann cell GECI, DREADD mice
As no good markers exist to distinguish ASCs from TPSCs, it is difficult to selectively manipulate these cells during development or in the context of injury and disease. Therefore, we are using mouse genetic techniques to identify such markers.

Although presynaptic dysfunction at the NMJ occurs early in animal models of ALS, whether this is causes or is merely associated with toxicity has not been tested. We are examining this issue in a mouse model of ALS in which presynaptic dysfunction, but not motor neuron death, occurs.
